The Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktova said that examination was appointed in the case of wiretapping conversations between ex-president of the country Petro Poroshenko and the former US vice president Joe Biden.
Earlier, the Ukrainian media reported that the State Bureau of Investigation opened a case due to wiretapping of the conversation between Poroshenko and Biden. In particular, an extract from the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations was published, which stated that the illegal use of technical means of obtaining information could harm the public interest. The state bureau of investigations called Poroshenko for questioning, but he did not appear, after which the court allowed his forced drive.
“As far as I know, an examination has been appointed. Now the circumstances of the recording, the circle of persons present, the applicable technical means and the ability to identify votes are being determined. The case is being investigated strictly within the framework of the law so that it does not become political in the light of the upcoming US elections”, – Venediktova said in an interview.
At the same time, she did not rule out future cooperation with American law enforcement officers in this case, if Ukrainian investigators and prosecutors consider this necessary.
Earlier, factional deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Andrei Derkach released records of allegedly telephone conversations of Poroshenko and Biden, which, according to him, testify to international corruption and state treason of the former president. One of the conversations concerned the dismissal of Viktor Shokin from the post of prosecutor general of Ukraine, allegedly at the request of Biden. In exchange for this, he promised Poroshenko to allocate $1 billion to Ukraine. In addition, the recording discussed issues of the alleged presence of a coalition in parliament, the resignation of the government of ex-prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the approval by the Rada of the government of ex-prime minister Vladimir Groysman. Poroshenko stated that these were fabricated.
Ex-Prosecutor General of Ukraine Shokin previously wrote a statement to law enforcement agencies about Biden’s interference in his work. The Ukrainian News Agency, citing a source in the State Bureau of Investigation, said that because of a possible interference by a US citizen in the work of Shokin, a lawsuit was opened in Ukraine. Verkhovna Rada agreed to dismiss Shokin in 2016. The ex-Attorney General tried to appeal his dismissal at the appellate level, but to no avail. He filed a new complaint with the Administrative Court of Cassation of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in September 2019.
