Russia is a neighbor of NATO, and the alliance needs to have a dialogue with the Russian side, in particular, on arms control, said Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg.
“Russia confirms its strength, invests a lot in its military capabilities, in particular, in its nuclear potential, all this against the backdrop of the crisis of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate and Shorter-Range Missiles … We respond to this and left no doubt that the alliance is ready to defend allies. But Russia is our neighbor, it will not disappear, we believe that we need to conduct a dialogue with Russia, in particular, on arms control. And I, as a Norwegian politician, know that negotiations can be conducted with Russia, agreements can be concluded, ” – Stoltenberg said at the presentation of the NATO strategy for the period until 2030 #NATO 2030.
The Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) was terminated on August 2, 2019 at the initiative of the United States. Russia also suspended its participation in the treaty.
