The former Bundeswehr inspector general, Harald Kujat, said on June 7 that the American troops were in Germany not because of the friendship of the peoples, but because they were of strategic interest.
“The Americans are not here to do us a favor, but because they are defending their strategic interests,” Kujat commented on the rumors about a partial withdrawal of American troops from Germany. And he added: “That is why they certainly will not completely withdraw their armed forces from Germany.”
Kujat referred to the main US military base in Germany – Ramstein. It is the center of coordination for many operations in the Middle East and Africa. And Germany provides training grounds, barracks and labor for the Americans. A partial withdrawal of US forces is not a threat to German security, Kujat said.
