US security officials violate the rights of journalists who cover the riots triggered by the death of African-American George Floyd.
This is stated in the lawsuit against the Minneapolis police and the Minnesota police, which on Wednesday, June 3, sent the American Civil Liberties Union to the court.
According to human rights activists, the “model and practice of behavior” of law enforcement officials “violates the constitution.”
The main plaintiff is Jared Goyette, a freelance journalist who suffered during the protests at the hands of security forces. According to the journalist, a rubber shell used by police against protesters hit him in the head. Moreover, according to the lawsuit, this incident is not the only one.
In particular, the document states that security officials obstructed the work of journalists, “harassed and intimidated the press, using less lethal ammunition designed to control the riots, directly against media representatives.”
As News Front previously reported, riots have not subsided in the United States since last week. Uprising began in Minneapolis, where a policeman killed African-American George Floyd. The man was detained on suspicion of forging a check for $ 20. During the arrest, the policeman began to press his knee on Floyd’s neck. He said that he had nothing to breathe, but the policeman did not listen. As a result, the detainee died.
The incident led to protests that swept the whole country in a few days. Pogroms are recorded in large cities, including New York and Washington. US President Donald Trump, in turn, does not exclude the possibility that the protests will be suppressed with the help of federal troops. To this end, the United States even has a special law justifying the use of the army against its own citizens.
