Despite the fact that both Democrats and Republicans did everything possible to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad, now the survival of Syria is largely dependent on the presidential election in the United States.
This was reported by the American publication Foreign Policy in an article demonstrating support for 77-year-old Democrat Joe Biden, who expects to defeat Donald Trump in the November 2020 presidential election.
The media drew attention to the fact that the armed conflict that the United States has been fueling for years destroyed the Syrian economy. However, so far, one of the key financial backers of the republic has been Iran. In other circumstances, Syria could continue to count on Iran’s support, however, Donald Trump began to exert sanction pressure on the Islamic republic.
The publication writes that both Barack Obama and his successor Donald Trump acted the same with respect to Syria, “participating in comprehensive military interventions” and “imposing severe economic sanctions” on the government. But it was the Republican administration that weakened Syria’s important partner.
At the same time, the author emphasizes the merits of Obama, who concluded a nuclear deal with Iran and “allowed” the economy of the Middle East to flourish. Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan for the Iranian Nuclear Program “has completely changed this process.”
“While US intervention played an important role in the collapse of the Syrian economy, Assad could always count on support from Iran to enhance the welfare of his country. For this reason, it is precisely the divergent approaches of Trump and former President Barack Obama to Iran that have had the greatest impact on the Syrian economy, ” the article says.
