A group of experts from the Council of Europe has warned of the risk of terrorists using biological weapons after the coronavirus pandemic, the Funke media group reported, citing experts.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how modern society is vulnerable to viral infections and what shock they can potentially cause”, – the anti-terrorism committee said in a statement.
The deliberate use of pathogens by terrorists “can be extremely effective”, and the damage to people and the economy can be much greater than as a result of “traditional” terrorist attacks, experts warn.
Earlier, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, said in an interview that coronavirus is another reason to think about the need for greater transparency in the field of biological weapons. In his opinion, humanity will have to change the international legal framework in order to be sure of biological safety.
On March 11, the World Health Organization announced an outbreak of a new coronavirus infection with COVID-19 pandemic. According to the latest WHO data, more than 5.2 million cases of the disease have been recorded in the world, more than 337 thousand people have died.
