The UN Secretary General António Guterres welcomes the declared truce in Afghanistan on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr conversation, spokesman for the Secretary General Stefan Dujarric said.
Earlier, the Taliban announced a ceasefire in Afghanistan for three days on the occasion of the Muslim festival of conversation Eid al-Fitr (Uraza-bairam). Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, in response, instructed the security services to comply with him.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the ceasefire announced by the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban, which will make possible the peaceful celebration of Eid al-Fitr”, – Dujarrick said in a statement.
According to him, the UN Secretary General calls on all interested parties to seize this opportunity and join the peace process.
“Only a peaceful settlement can put an end to the suffering in Afghanistan. The UN is committed to supporting the people and government of Afghanistan in this important endeavor”, – the statement said.
