The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a plan to create a new department for the response to outbreaks of infectious diseases in the structure of the Department of State, the Politico newspaper reports citing documents.
The new body will become an alternative mechanism for carrying out certain types of work by the World Health Organization (WHO) amid threats by the US president to stop funding the organization on an ongoing basis, the report said.
According to the publication, Dr. Debra Brix, who is responsible for responding to the pandemic of a new coronavirus infection, may head the new department of the State Department.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the United States will stop financing WHO and revise its membership in it if the organization does not demonstrate its independence from Chinese policy and does not carry out reforms in its structure and management.
