Venezuelan Prosecutor General Tarek William Saab said law enforcement officers detained a total of 66 people involved in the May 3 events, when local self-defense forces partially destroyed a group of mercenaries trying to enter the country by sea.
The head of the Venezuelan Interior Ministry said on May 3 that authorities had prevented a naval invasion of speedboats by Colombia in La Guaira, eight attackers were killed. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the purpose of the invasion was to kill him, and among the detained participants in the attack were two US citizens, whom he called the personal guard of the American president. The US and Colombian authorities said they were not related to these events.
“At present, 66 people involved in these events have been arrested and are under the rule of justice. 99 arrest warrants were issued, of which 63 are still in the process of execution, ” said the prosecutor general.
The Prosecutor General added that during 11 interrogations, an organization was established that was responsible for financing the logistics, food and rental of training camps for mercenaries – this is the Venezuelan Futuro Presente fund, which will also issue arrest warrants for its employees.
