“The proposal to introduce a law on national security in Hong Kong could lead to the fact that the mainland’s special services will establish bases in the global financial center,” the report said.

According to the agency, Western diplomats opposed Beijing’s decisions, arguing that the law could give security and intelligence forces “powers that could possibly endanger rights and freedoms.”

In turn, the head of the Hong Kong administration, Kerry Lam, assured that the legislation would not affect the rights of ordinary citizens and would not jeopardize the independence of the judiciary.
