Abe refused to resign despite the scandal surrounding the Tokyo prosecutor

Hiroma Kurokawa resigned on May 21. The reason for his resignation was the scandal of gambling for money during the national emergency regime.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that he did not intend to leave his post despite the scandalous resignation of Tokyo Prosecutor Hiroma Kurokawa. The head of government made the corresponding statement on Friday during the meeting of the profile committee of the lower house of the Japanese parliament.

“I have a mission to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, protect the lives and health of citizens, and ensure the continuity of companies”, –  Abe said.

Earlier in the meeting, Japanese opposition MPs criticized the head of government, saying that “Prime Minister Abe and [Justice Minister Masako] Mori were not held responsible” for the prosecutor’s actions.

Kurokawa resigned May 21 and the Japanese cabinet approved her on Friday. The reason for his resignation was a scandal about gambling for money during the national emergency regime caused by the coronavirus pandemic. It was noted that the prosecutor visited the apartment of Sankei newspaper journalist in Tokyo on May 1 and 13, where they were playing mahjong for money. An Asahi correspondent and another Sankei employee were also involved in the game. Each time, the prosecutor was taken home in a rented car. Shukan Bunshun Weekly published information about that.

As a result, the behaviour of the Tokyo prosecutor drew strong criticism from the public and opposition parties. It is noted that the fact that 63-year-old Kurokawa has close ties with Prime Minister Abe caused particular dissatisfaction.
