Trump wants to have a face-to-face G7 summit in June

At the same time, U.S. President’s spokeswoman Kaylie McEnani said there was no specific date yet.

U.S. President Donald Trump wants to hold a face-to-face summit of the G7 in June, but no specific date. This was stated at a briefing on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Kaylie McEnani.

“The president really wants to hold a G7 summit in Washington as soon as we open the country (lifting of sanitary restrictions imposed by the pandemic), as soon as the world begins to open. We would like to hold it in June, but there is no announcement of a specific date”, –  she said.

Asked how the summit plans relate to the current restrictions on flights, Makenani said Trump will cancel the measures once she is convinced of the safety of citizens’ health.

“As for the summit here, it’s the president’s prerogative, as the U.S. will open up, the world <…> This will show a growing optimism that the leaders will come together and do business as usual”, –  the spokeswoman said.

Earlier Trump said that he was exploring the possibility of holding a G7 summit in person at his residence in Camp David. On Wednesday, he discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron by phone the organization of the summit in the near future.

On March 20, Deputy White House spokesman Judd Deer said that Trump decided to cancel the June meeting of G7 leaders in Camp David because of the pandemic, instead the summit was planned to be held via video conference. The residence of American presidents Camp David is 100 km north-west of Washington.
