Media says China is preparing to officially ban separatism in Hong Kong

Beijing intends to submit a bill for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which will ban separatist and subversive activities, foreign interference and terrorism in the city, the South China Morning Post reported citing sources.

According to the publication, official Beijing concluded that the Hong Kong Legislative Council could not pass a national security law in the light of the political situation in the area. For this reason, a similar initiative was submitted to the All-China Assembly of People’s Representatives.

The draft law will be presented to delegates on Thursday, May 21, and submitted to the Assembly on Friday afternoon.

Since the beginning of June 2019, mass protests have been held in Hong Kong, provoked by the consideration of the extradition bill. As a result, the authorities made concessions, and in early October the document was withdrawn.

In just six months, over 900 demonstrations and marches took place in a special administrative region of the PRC, and nearly six thousand people were detained.
