Poland has updated its national security strategy

The document also envisages strengthening the Polish army’s ability to deliver high-precision long-range strikes.

Poland has adopted an updated national security strategy. This document was published on the website of the National Security Bureau on May 12.

Polish President Andrzej Duda signed the updated strategy the same day. In the text of the document, Russia was named the main threat to Warsaw.

“The Russian Federation is actively developing offensive capabilities, including in the western strategic direction, expanding, among other things, the system of barriers to access/zoning in the Baltic Sea region, including the Kaliningrad region, as well as conducting large-scale military exercises based on scenarios involving conflict with members of the North Atlantic Alliance, rapid deployment of large compounds and even the use of nuclear weapons”, –  the document says.

According to the strategy, the key factor in Poland’s national security is its integration into transatlantic and European structures, as well as the development of bilateral and regional relations with key partners.

“Strategic rivalry between the United States, the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation is an important phenomenon that affects the entire system of international relations”, –  the document says.

Poland needs to ensure security in the energy sector, the strategy emphasizes.

“Russian oil and gas products dominate the markets of Poland and other countries in Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula. New projects, particularly Nord Stream-2, will increase the dependence of the states of these regions on the means of energy movement to the east, thus increasing the possibility of using selective gas supplies as an instrument of political pressure”, –  the strategy says.

According to the document, the modernization of the Polish Armed Forces is determined by the task of increasing defense financing to 2.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2024. “[It is envisaged] to create a national integrated situational awareness system consisting of various intelligence, communication, management and control systems, including remote sensing satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles operating within network-centric structures with full cryptographic protection. It is envisaged to establish a national satellite communications system,” the strategy says.

The document also envisages strengthening of the Polish army’s ability to deliver high-precision long-range strikes, as well as anti-tank and air defense.
