“When did we become so incompetent?” – an American journalist asks to feel sorry for the United States

Until now, “American exclusivity” has been perceived as a reason to admire or even fear the United States. But in modern history, there has not yet been a reason to feel sorry for the United States. Now it is.

This was told by journalist Eugene Robinson in a publication for The Washington Post.
“Few countries on Earth have handled the Coronavirus pandemic worse than the United States. What happened to us? How did we become so incapacitated? When did we become so incompetent?”, the author asks the questions.

The actions and inactions of the U.S. government, the journalist calls “shocking and deadly,” because the authorities “waited too long to impose the blockage. According to him, the coronavirus pandemic is a “stress test for society” and the US has every chance to fail it.

“No amount of patriotism or pride can change horrific facts”, –  Robinson continues. – “I’m used to thinking of a country like South Korea as a junior partner, a beneficiary of American experience and assistance. However, the number of deaths in the United States from COVID-19 exceeds 85,000, while the number of deaths in South Korea is 260. This is not a typo.”

So far, it has been accepted that the U.S. has the best scientific capacity, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have managed to ruin the development of the coronavirus test. What’s more, the disease simply allowed it to spread around the country for several months. When action was taken, it was too late, the journalist complains.

“The phrase ‘American exclusivity’ has always meant different things to different people: that this nation should be admired, or perhaps feared. So far, at least in my life, it has not assumed any regrets about the United States”, – said Eugene Robinson.
