The UN expects that the United States and Russia will be able to agree to extend the Treaty on Measures to Further Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Arms. This was stated by the official representative of the UN Secretary General Stefan Dujarric.
“We consider agreements such as strategic offensive arms as an integral part of the non-proliferation and disarmament sphere. We hope that the countries participating in the agreement will be able to find a way to extend it, ” said Dujarric.
As Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Ryabkov noted on Thursday, Moscow still has not received any signals from Washington about its intention to extend the START Treaty. Russia offers the United States to extend the Treaty on LSOA by five years, during which time it will be possible to work out a new mechanism.
