The German political party Christian Democratic Union, which has long been led by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, has postponed a congress at which a new leader should be elected, at least until December 2020. The reason for this decision is called the coronavirus pandemic.
This was reported by the German edition of RND, which had at its disposal a letter from the current CDU leader, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, to party members.
“Despite COVID-19, our goal remains the same as it was at the beginning of the year. We want to train personnel by the end of the year, solve organizational issues and draw up a political program in order to be ready for the next election, ” the letter says.
It is noted that the pandemic made it impossible to hold an extraordinary congress of the political party, so the election of a new leader will occur no earlier than December 2020, which is scheduled for the planned annual congress of the CDU.
