Caracas said the U.S. is illegally pursuing fuel tankers for Venezuela

Earlier Reuters reported that Washington is considering measures against Iran for supplying fuel to Venezuela.

The U.S. is pursuing tankers carrying fuel to Venezuela, which is a violation of international norms and the rights of citizens of the Republic, said South American Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Thursday.

“Another evidence for the world that we will submit to the International Criminal Court: at the height of the pandemic, Washington is chasing tankers that transport our oil and gasoline [to Venezuela]. This is a flagrant violation of international law and the fundamental rights of Venezuelans”, –  the diplomat wrote.

Reuters reported Thursday, citing a senior official of the U.S. presidential administration, that the U.S. is considering measures against Iran for supplying fuel to Venezuela.

The situation in Venezuela worsened after the opposition leader Juan Guaydo, whose appointment as Speaker of Parliament was annulled by the Supreme Court two days earlier, declared himself Acting President on January 23, 2019. He was recognized as interim head of state by the United States, joined by the Lima Group countries (except Mexico), the Organization of American States and most EU countries. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called it a coup attempt and announced that he had broken off diplomatic relations with the United States. He was supported by Russia, Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua, Syria and Turkey.
