The channel’s interlocutor pointed out that the U.S. administration has no authority to make such decisions.
The U.S. administration is not consulting in any way on the possibility that the country’s presidential election could be postponed due to the new coronavirus pandemic. This was reported on Wednesday by the channel CNN.
According to a source of officials, there have been no discussions on this topic. The official drew attention to the fact that the U.S. administration does not have the authority to make such decisions. According to the channel, only the US Congress can change the election deadlines.
The topic of possible postponement of elections due to the pandemic attracted special media attention after the publication of an interview with the Senior Advisor and son-in-law of the US President Jared Kushner to Time magazine on Tuesday. He was asked about the possibility of changing the election date for the head of state. The elections are now scheduled for November 3. Kushner replied that he could not say with certainty whether it was possible. He stated that no changes are planned at the moment.
Some media believe that Kushner leaves it up to the US administration to decide on the potential postponement of the election and allows for such a possibility. Later he published the following statement: “I did not participate in any consultations on attempts to change the terms of the presidential election, and I have no information about them”.
According to Johns Hopkins University, which carries out calculations based on information from federal and local authorities, the U.S. recorded more than 1.38 million cases of infection with coronavirus, more than 83.2 thousand people died.
