If the offer passes, it will hurt the interests of British farmers.

Britain plans to reduce duties on agricultural products from the United States

The British government is discussing the possibility of reducing tariffs on imports of American agricultural products for the sake of progress in bilateral free trade negotiations.

“The Department of International Trade is considering a” large concession package “for negotiators from the United States in the coming months to reduce the cost of certain types of agricultural imports,” writes the Financial Times, citing sources in the cabinet.

Last week, the United States and Britain began formal negotiations on a free trade agreement, promising to quickly complete a deal that could withstand the massive impact of the coronavirus pandemic on trade flows and the two economies. Agriculture is expected to be one of the most pressing negotiating issues, given the strong British opposition to American genetically modified crops and antibacterial drugs for poultry.
