“It makes me nervous” – Merkel intends to cooperate with Russian Federation despite “spy scandal”

Russophobic theories about the attack of Russian hackers on the computer of German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not stop her work on normalizing relations with the Russian Federation.

The head of the German government said this on Wednesday, May 13, speaking in the Bundestag.

She emphasized that such accusations are “unnerving”, because they create a “tense field” in which one has to work. At the same time, Merkel assured that she did not intend to stop cooperation with Russia because of the “spy scandal” caused by the German media.

“I can say very honestly: it makes me nervous. Anyway, I will continue to try to improve relations with Russia, because I believe that there are good reasons for continuing these diplomatic efforts”, – she said.

Earlier, the German edition of Spiegel began to claim that 5 years ago the chancellor’s computer was allegedly hacked by Russian hackers who gained access to thousands of emails. The culprit of the incident is called the unknown with the nickname “Scaramouche”. According to media reports, he downloaded 16 gigabytes of data from Merkel’s work computer.

The spy scandal was picked up by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. It was reported there that the German prosecutor’s office issued an arrest warrant for Russian Dmitry Badin, who is suspected of a cyber attack on the German parliament in the spring of 2015. Prosecutors believe that he is a member of the hacker group Fancy Bear, allegedly “associated with the GRU”.
