CNN: U.S. Democratic Party committee has allowed the convention to be held in virtual format

The name of the Democrat candidate for presidency will be known at the congress.

The Regulatory Committee of the National Committee of the Democratic Party (NCCDP) of the United States on Tuesday adopted a resolution allowing the national congress to be held in alternative ways, including virtual mode. At the congress, the name of the Democrats’ presidential candidate, Donald Trump’s rival in the elections in early November, will be known, reported the CNN TV company.

“At this critical time, when the scale and consequences of the pandemic are unknown in the coming August, we are giving the convention organizers the opportunity to consider a wide range of options,” CNN quoted CNN Secretary Jason Ray as saying. “This isn’t so much a plan “A” or “B” as it is all part of the convention, which will have to be increased or reduced as we approach August”, –  he continued.

Ray made it clear that Democrats reserve the right to hold the congress with the physical participation of delegates. “I expect and hope that the congress will be exciting and impressive,” he added. The resolution is subject to approval by the full NCDP members, voting will be held by e-mail and telephone, the TV company specified.

On April 2, the National Committee of the Democratic Party, in light of the unprecedented health crisis faced by the U.S., decided to postpone the general party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 13-16 to August 17-20.

Former Vice President Joseph Biden remained the only Democrat candidate for U.S. presidency after Vermont State Senator Bernie Sanders withdrew from the campaign on April 8. The New York Times estimates that Biden has already secured the support of 1,435 delegates to the National Congress. In order to become a presidential candidate, in the first round of voting at the Congress, a candidate must obtain the support of 1,991 delegates.

The current U.S. President Donald Trump has already received enough votes of the Party Congress delegates to nominate a candidate from the Republicans in the presidential election. The congress will be held August 24-27 in the city of Charlotte (North Carolina). The 59th US presidential election is scheduled for November 3.
