Afghan war and reaction to COVID-19 – Washington compares Washington’s two historic failures

While America “brought democracy” to Afghanistan, many US citizens were not even aware of the armed conflict. While millions of Americans are waiting in line for unemployment benefits, others are relaxing on the beach.

This is stated in an article by Politico.

According to the authors, there is not much difference between the military intervention of the United States in Afghanistan and the current government intervention in the work of enterprises, medical and educational institutions. In particular, both cases were a shameful failure for Washington, a demonstration of the incompetence of officials.

“Many Americans are confused about the purpose of these interventions. Our friends and neighbors ask: Are blackouts designed for personal protection against illness? To completely destroy the virus? To buy time to build the capacity of hospitals? The resulting dissonance is terrible: millions of Americans are being laid off, while others are on the beach”, – the publication said.

Comparing what is happening with the protracted and extremely dubious Afghan campaign, the authors recall that even politicians are not able to provide an adequate justification for this intervention.

“During the conflict, there were times when many Americans did not even know that we were at war. There was also a clear dissonance: the Americans were told that it was an existential struggle, while millions were on the beach, their daily lives were completely unchanged”, – the article says.

In particular, during the conflict about 20 military leaders were replaced, who were sent to Afghanistan. At the same time, the rotation of units was even more fleeting. All this led to “instability in the command chain”, the authors write. There was no hierarchy, and each unit worked with its own tactics and even with its own goals

The same is true for the United States response to the COVID-19 epidemic. Lack of coordination between hospitals to build capacity; disagreements between the position of city authorities and regional; the constant struggle between states for medical products; removal of quarantine in some states while blocking continues in others – this creates an extremely alarming picture, far from a competent response to a deadly virus.

“The lack of unity, not to mention the coordination of the key principles of the fight against a virus that does not recognize political boundaries, is the cause of the disaster”, – the authors stated.
