Coronavirus could trigger a new migration crisis in Europe

By closing its borders, the EU has temporarily suspended the flow of migrants, but it will resume with renewed force if the pandemic increases tensions in the Middle East and North Africa.

This is reported by the European Union Agency for Asylum.

Department analysts believe that the spread of coronavirus in disadvantaged countries will lead to a food crisis. Moreover, the pandemic may strengthen the position of the terrorist organization “Islamic State”. As a result, it will provoke “increased migration related to asylum in the medium term.

“The main countries of origin of asylum seekers <…> have medium and high levels of vulnerability to hazards (including infections) and lack of coping capacities”, –  the response says. – “The risk of destabilizing effects of COVID-19 outbreaks may affect future asylum trends”.
