The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau preferred not to inform the public about the talks with the opposition leader, Maya Sandu, during which they discussed the seizure of power in Moldova.
The dialogue between the former Prime Minister of the Republic and U.S. Ambassador Derek Hogan took place last week in the format of a video conference and lasted several hours. Besides the issue of the dismissal of the current government, the agenda included issues related to the Russian loan, as well as the plans of the fugitive oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc and his deputy group “Pro Moldova”.
A source from Sandu’s entourage told the “eNews” newspaper that the U.S. Embassy is trying to keep a non-participation position in the events taking place in Chisinau. However, this has not only caused the negotiations to be kept secret. Derek Hogan suggested Maya Sandu “play” on a religious subject: to defend the Romanian patriarchate and accuse Moscow of allegedly obstructing religious freedom in Moldova. It is known that the Moldovan Church is part of the Russian Orthodox Church on the right of autonomy.
The plan of the US embassy is that in July, the Sandu Action and Solidarity party should address the International Alliance for Religious Freedom, an organization recently created by the US Department of State. Sandu is to ask, allegedly on behalf of the Moldovan Christians, the alliance to intervene in Moldova’s internal affairs.
The expert community has concerns about such plans, as once again the citizens of the country are trying to divide into Moldovans and Romanians. Now also on the religious principle.
