Over three million Americans lost their jobs in a week

More than 30 million American citizens have lost their jobs since mid-March, when all businesses closed.

In the U.S. about 3.2 million citizens asked for unemployment benefits during the week, reports BBC News.

Since mid-March, when businesses in all states closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Americans have filed about 33 million applications for unemployment benefits.

It is noted that in the previous week the number of new applications for unemployment benefits was almost 3.8 million. In recent weeks, the unemployment rate began to decline.

The unemployment report for April from the Department of Labor is also expected soon.

Recall that in the first quarter of 2020, the U.S. economy contracted by 4.8% for the first time in six years.
