The United Kingdom welcomed Russia’s efforts to develop a new type of vaccine against coronavirus. This was reported to TASS correspondent on Wednesday by a source in the British Foreign Office after a telephone conversation between the head of the department of Dominic Raab and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“He (phone conversation) provided an opportunity to discuss the international response to coronavirus and the importance of cooperation on this issue. We welcome Russia’s efforts in vaccine research and development, as well as its willingness to help Britain’s stranded Britons return home from Russia”, – said the agency interlocutor.

He explained that the telephone conversation “was timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, an event of great importance to both countries.

The call was the first since Raab took office in July last year and was an opportunity for “a broader conversation about areas of cooperation”,  the Forin office said.

In a statement released earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the foreign ministers of the two countries had noted the unsatisfactory state of bilateral relations and expressed the mood to solve problems in a pragmatic manner.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Raab and Lavrov discussed topical issues on the international agenda, including the Syrian settlement and the domestic crisis, the work of the UN Security Council, and exchanged congratulations on the approaching 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War. The conversation was initiated by London.
