The Court in New York insisted on holding initial elections despite the pandemic

Lawyers of former participants of the election race said that if they were cancelled, politicians would suffer “irreversible damage”.

The court in the USA has cancelled the decision on refusal of carrying out of primary elections (primaries) of the Democratic Party in the state of New York, despite pandemic. This was reported on Tuesday by the agency Associated Press (AP).

New York State South District Judge Analyza Torres made that decision after lawyers from Vermont State Senator Bernie Sanders and businessman Andrew Young, former campaigners, said on Monday that if the primary election did not take place, politicians would suffer “irreversible damage. The judge agreed with their arguments, pointing out that not holding the election would violate the rights of them and the voters.

She also noted, however, that until the primaries, previously postponed owing to the pandemic from 28 April to 23 June, the leadership of the Democratic Party field office would have sufficient time to prepare for their conduct in maximum security. In addition, the judge noted that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had previously allowed all residents of the State to vote in the primaries by mail.

On 27 April, the State Tabulation Commission decided to cancel the New York Democracy primaries in order to reduce turnout and the number of polling stations in the context of the pandemic. It became possible to cancel them after Saunders refused to participate in the election race and the only candidate for a Democrat candidate in the election of the head of state was former U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden.

The New York Times reports that Biden has already garnered the support of 1,435 delegates to the Party’s National Congress after several dozen primary elections. At the Congress, which will be held July 13-16 in Milwaukee (Wisconsin), will be named a rival to current U.S. President Donald Trump. For nomination in the first round of voting at the Congress Biden needs the support of 1,991 delegates. The 59th US presidential election will be held on November 3.
