The North Atlantic Alliance is ready to implement a military plan in response to the pandemic of the coronavirus infection COVID-19.
The NATO leadership came to this decision during a secret meeting. The consultations took place last week, but only now some details were published in the media.
According to the German publication Der Spiegel, the Secretary General of the bloc Jens Stoltenberg, as well as representatives of the alliance’s countries, are ready to launch a military action plan in the event of a second pandemic wave. The responsibility for preparing the strategy was assigned to the commander-in-chief of the NATO armed forces in Europe, General Tod Walters.
As planned, this should allow the alliance to better prepare for the fight against coronavirus, including from a military point of view. In this regard, NATO officials set out to develop a long-term strategy by the fall, called the Pandemic Emergency Plan.
The Secretary General of the Alliance insisted that the first document be ready and submitted at the end of June. It should be considered at a meeting of NATO defense ministers.
