Cuba expects the United States to properly investigate the attack on its embassy in Washington

In the Foreign Office, countries also called on Washington to comply with its obligations to protect diplomatic assurances.

The Cuban leadership is waiting for the results of the U.S. authorities’ investigation into the Thursday night shelling of the Embassy of the Republic in Washington, D.C., and calls for compliance with obligations to protect the diplomatic mission. A statement to that effect was circulated by the island’s Foreign Office on Thursday.

“The Cuban Government expects a proper investigation by the United States authorities into the identity and motives of the author of this aggression and the circumstances surrounding this act. The State Department [of the United States] is aware of what happened. States are obligated to take all necessary measures to protect the buildings of accredited diplomatic missions from any intrusion or damage and not to allow the tranquility or dignity of missions to be disturbed”, –  the document says. The Office noted that no one was injured by the shooting, but the embassy building was damaged.

A man opened fire on the Cuban Embassy in Washington on Thursday night. A burgundy-coloured SUV, probably associated with the suspect, was parked next to the diplomatic mission, the police noted. An American flag and a white mask were found in the car. U.S. law enforcement agencies have detained the shooter, but have not yet made public the motives of the suspect.

The work of the Cuban Embassy in the USA was resumed in 2015 after the restoration of bilateral diplomatic relations between the countries under the previous American administration headed by former President Barack Obama.
