Gunnar Lindemann: We bow to heroes and remember the brave fallen

May 9 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the reign of terror under National Socialism.

“We must thank the heroic Soviet army, which took the brunt of the war. We bow to the heroes and remember the brave fallen. We, the Germans in particular, are grateful for this honorable achievement of the Russian people. Freedom and democracy are the most important fundamental rights of our society today”, –  said Berlin MP Gunnar Lindemann.

Due to the global crisis caused by the coronavirus, celebrations and honours of the heroes of the liberation from fascism cannot take place this year as they did earlier.

Lindemann: “Even if we can’t honor the memory of the heroes on the big celebration, everyone will remember that May 9 is the day of Europe’s liberation from fascism. I will do the same”.

It is especially important to remember the past and the consequences of fascism.

“If you forget what we have been observing in Ukraine for 6 years, there will be wars and destruction again. Every day people die in Donbass due to the fault of Ukrainian fascists, who returned to their positions in the armed forces and paramilitary formations. We also remember the brave victims in Donetsk and Lugansk. We must not forget the ongoing war here. Let us unite for peace”, –  added Mr. Lindemann.
