DM: British nuclear submarine commander dismissed for crew party

This is a violation of instructions prohibiting any quarantine activities.

The commander of the British nuclear submarine Trenchant, John Lewis, who allowed the crew to hold a party at Devonport (southwest county of Devon) in the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic, has been removed from office. The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday, citing a Navy spokesman.

“We can confirm that the commander of HMS Trenchant has been removed”, –  the representative said in a statement.

The decision was made by the British Navy’s leadership after investigating the commander of a submarine equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles in early April after her return from a long-distance hike. It is a “breach of instructions by the commander”, which prohibits any quarantine activities.

The crew of the Trafalgar, which had been on a long-distance hike for several weeks, were prohibited from leaving the base under quarantine upon return. The commander of the sub was acquiesced in the actions of sailors who wanted to “blow off steam” after hard work in cramped conditions at sea and threw a party with a barbecue and a disco. Proof footage from submariners’ smartphones appeared on their social networks.

Officer Lewis became commander of Trenchant less than a year ago. He had previously served on another nuclear submarine, which was also at the center of the scandal when nine crew members were found to have taken cocaine. And this time, according to the Navy spokesman, Lewis is not being fired, he will be appointed to another position.
