A joint statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the US leader Donald Trump on the anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe is a signal that countries can unite for common goals, such as the fight against coronavirus, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Earlier, Putin and Trump adopted a joint statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe, the Kremlin’s press service said.
“The Spirit of Elba” is an example of how the Russian Federation and the United States can put aside contradictions, build trust and cooperate in the name of a common goal, the report said. Its authors note that the heroic feat of soldiers who defeated the Nazis will never be forgotten.
“I hope that the crisis caused by COVID-19 will push all the players of world politics, first of all, the leading states, to put aside the opportunistic differences and engage in joint work, professional work, in the name of ensuring a peaceful, prosperous future of all nations. A signal that inspires optimism was given by Presidents of Russia – Vladimir Putin, and the United States – Donald Trump, who issued a joint statement yesterday on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe, where they emphasized exactly that at that time, the USA and the Soviet Union were able to rise above disagreements, contradictions and join forces for a battle, a decisive battle with a common enemy”, – Lavrov said at a lecture for MGIMO students in a video conference format.
He emphasized that now, by and large, the task for our countries is in exactly the same way.
