The economic crisis that will follow the Coronavirus pandemic can only be overcome if European countries put aside all differences and act together, European Parliament President David Sassoli said after talks with European leaders at a video conference of the EU Council on Thursday.
“No one can do it alone. The time has come to unite. The European domestic market is united, and if we do not work in a coordinated manner, we will not be able to restart our economies, which are largely interconnected and interdependent”, – Sassoli said.
He added that to overcome the crisis and restore economic growth, the European Union needs an ambitious “Marshall Plan”.
“The Council today is only taking the first step in the post-crisis period, it will need strategies for the medium and long term to be able to restructure the economy. We all call for a new ‘Marshall Plan’ for Europe”, – stressed Sassoli.
He also pointed out that the funds for recovery “will not come from abroad.”
“The funds will not come from abroad this time, but from European countries and economies. We should be able to finance this “Marshall Plan”. It opens up a lot of questions, but we must do it together with a sense of solidarity”, – said the head of the European Parliament.
