Greece struggles with COVID-19 among refugees – migrants have revolted

In Greek camps for migrants, mass protests began after the coronavirus outbreak.

According to local media, illegals have blocked Camp Moria on Lesbos Island. They’re holding posters with inscriptions: “Freedom for all” and “We can get COVID-19 too.”

Protests began after three camps on the Greek mainland discovered numerous cases of coronavirus infection. The camps are now under quarantine. As a preventive measure, the Greek authorities decided to evacuate 1,500 elderly or sick migrants from Camp Moria. The same procedure is expected in the camps on Chios and Samos islands. The evacuees will be moved to the mainland, which has caused discontent among the migrants, who also want to get out of the camps.

To date, no cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in the refugee camps on the islands. However, doctors fear that it is only a matter of time. Athens has already strengthened health controls in the Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos camps and has hired additional staff. There are now some 40,000 refugees.
