Austrian expert: coronavirus is becoming a problem for the intelligence services

There is no doubt that the current Coronavirus crisis is a disaster for the economy and a serious deterioration of the social structure.

But marginal areas of public life also suffer constantly from this international crisis.

According to the Austrian geostrategic analyst Patrick Poppel, the coronavirus crisis may also affect the activities of special services and state security agencies.

“Now the security services are facing a serious problem because the social behavior of people is changing”, –  Poppel said.

Since current regulations and developments (home office) mean that much more information is being digitally transmitted, more resources need to be allocated to protect data and counter espionage.

Similarly, the expansion of digital surveillance mechanisms, continuing curfews and massive restrictions on freedom of movement will limit the ability of opposing agents to infiltrate states.

“Secret services will have to develop new strategies for both espionage and defense”, – Poppel said.
