Greek Prime Minister to announce easing of restrictions due to coronavirus

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will announce next week a plan for the transition to normal life and the easing of restrictions imposed by the coronavirus, government spokesman Stelios Petsas said at a briefing on Tuesday.

In Greece on April 27, various restrictions imposed since mid-March will expire. Most businesses in the country are out of operation and aimless exit from home and movement by car is prohibited.

“The Prime Minister will inform the Greeks on April 27, or immediately thereafter, early next week, about the next steps and plans to return to normal life”, –  said Petsas.

He also said that next week, the prime minister will inform the parliament about the situation and the next steps.
According to Petsas, the transition to a normal life will be gradual.

“We are not there yet. We need to follow the measures that are in force until 27 April. In any case, the return will be gradual, long and purposeful, so that we do not have failures. It will be a difficult task that we all have to accomplish together”, – said Petsas.

In his opinion, it is possible to start with population groups which, as statistics and specialists show, are less exposed to serious complications.

“This can start with economic activities that involve less crowding, such as small retail stores. This may also include schools. In any case, we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable groups, like the elderly and fellow citizens with diseases”, –  the spokesman said.

“The gradual transition to normal life starts symbolically with the judiciary, as from April 27, mortgage offices will be opened. In addition, magistrates’ courts and courts of first instance will be open for specific court cases, where there is consent of the parties. To minimize any crowding, the process will be conducted through secretaries without the participation of the parties,” Petsas said.
