Uzbekistan awaits assistance from the European Union in the fight against coronavirus

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and head of the European Council Charles Michel discussed in a telephone conversation on Monday issues of bilateral cooperation, in particular, Brussels’ assistance in combating the spread of a new type of coronavirus COVID-19, the press service of the Uzbek leader said.


On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus COVID-19 a pandemic. According to the latest WHO data, more than 2.24 million cases of infection were recorded in the world, more than 152 thousand people died. In Uzbekistan, the number of registered cases of coronavirus on Monday exceeded 1.6 thousand, five patients died and 261 recovered.

According to the press service, the head of the European Council highly appreciated and fully supported the measures taken in Uzbekistan to counteract the spread of coronavirus infection and minimize its negative impact on the ongoing reforms in socio-economic development of the country.

“Michel expressed readiness of the European Union to provide necessary support in the fight against this global challenge, informed about the adopted decision to allocate financial and technical assistance to Uzbekistan for these purposes”, –  the statement reads.
