The Tories are betting on total control – Johnson risks ending up like a typical dictator

Boris Johnson’s administration aims for maximum dominance, which no British government has ever had.

The Tories are betting on total control – Johnson runs the risk of ending up like a typical dictator…
This is what British journalist and historian Andy Beckett is writing about in a publication for The Guardian.
He noted that despite frank miscalculations in politics, which provoked, among other things, separatist sentiment in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the tori won the election for the fourth time in a row, with an incredible margin. Moreover, the conservatives are also given a fifth victory, which no British party has done since the early 19th century.

“The Tories convened and lost the EU referendum, pushed Scotland and Northern Ireland to leave Britain, pursued austerity policies that caused enormous damage to public services and society – without reducing public debt as promised – and delivered the worst wage growth in two centuries”, –  Beckett said.

He also recalled that the government of Boris Johnson was marked by incompetence even now, in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic COVID-19. When the spread of the disease will decline, the British will be able to associate conservatives with the “worst horrors”.

“Surveys show that the public disapproves of their work in times of crisis. Nevertheless, there is a general recognition that for the foreseeable future, whether good or bad, torie will be our masters”, –  the author admitted.

Against this background, the administration of Boris Johnson seeks to maximize the dominance that none of the previous British governments had, the expert continues. He drew attention to how official briefings are not missed by unwanted journalists who are able to ask uncomfortable questions. At the same time, Johnson has avoided parliamentary control. All of this is accompanied by slogans that the Tori represent the people in a way that no other party does.

“In all these respects, Britain may approach becoming a one-party state”, – Beckett says. – “When the era of conservatives comes to an end, it can be spectacular. As many dictators and prime ministers have found out for themselves, there is one big problem for the practitioners of one-party rule. When the people finally decide that you failed to fulfill your obligations, they will not blame anyone else”.
