The insurgency movement Ansar Allah launched missile strikes against the cities of Marib and Hodaydah in Yemen. This was reported by Saudi newspaper Al Riyadh on Thursday, Yemeni Information Minister Muammar al-Iryani said.
He said the Husites have also attempted to regain control of the military camp in Al-Jawf province. The minister linked the mutineers’ actions to the announcement of a so-called Arabian alliance ceasefire in Yemen for two weeks.
On Wednesday, the official representative of the command of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia, Colonel Turki al-Maliki, informed that the alliance ceases military operations in Yemen for a period of two weeks in order to create conditions for the fight against the new coronavirus, Al Arabiya TV channel reports. A full ceasefire regime would come into effect at noon on Thursday and, as noted, could be further extended. Al-Maliki said the decision was in response to the UN Secretary-General’s call for a halt to all fighting to combat the pandemic.
Fighting between government forces and Hussites has continued in Yemen since August 2014. It has entered its most active phase with the March 2015 invasion of the country by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia. The then-called “Storm of Determination” operation against rebels who had taken control of much of Yemen was supported by Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They were joined by Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan and the Sudan.
