Since the beginning of the year Turkey has imported as much LNG from the US as it did last year.
In the first quarter of 2020, liquefied gas purchases from the United States to Turkey exceeded all shipments in 2019. According to the ICIS agency, they amounted to about 1.2 million tons (1.62 billion cubic meters). Last year, LNG imports from the United States to Turkey failed to reach 850 million cubic meters.
If for the whole 2019 Turkey imported 8.8 million tons of LNG (12 billion cubic meters), in January-March 2020 – 4.8 million tons (6.6 billion cubic meters). Taking advantage of the oversupply of gas on the world market, the state company BOTAS is actively buying liquefied gas, which many suppliers have to sell below the cost.
