Afghanistan is left with radicals, poverty and drugs – Germany has acknowledged the failure of the NATO campaign

The intervention in Afghanistan originally meant the destruction of radical Islamists, but now it is not terrorists who have to retreat, but the forces of the North Atlantic Alliance.

German journalist Sabina Matti talks about it in a publication for Deutschlandfunk.

She stresses that NATO’s Afghan campaign for the German army has been the longest running, but now it is coming to an end. The U.S. intends to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan in 2021, but the presence of Bundeswehr forces there is already only a formality.

“The United States and its allies are leaving the country with virtually no guarantees from the Taliban, according to the agreement that the Americans made with the insurgents at the end of February. This is recognition of a serious defeat for the West”, –  Matti said.

The journalist recalled that one of NATO’s key goals was “to eradicate Islamist terror in Afghanistan and establish a peaceful Afghan society. In reality, it has reached the point where the U.S. is negotiating with those who have been defeated.

“Extremists control most of the country, those against whom the mission was sent are now partners in negotiations. Afghanistan remains the world’s leading drug producer, poverty and corruption have not been eradicated, and ethnic and religious violence is deeply entrenched”, – Sabine Matti assessed the outcome of the Western intervention.

As a result, she stressed that NATO’s actions in Afghanistan are not just unsuccessful – they threaten even bigger problems. In particular, the surrender of the West to the terrorist group “Taliban” will inspire radical Islamists around the world.

As News Front reported, earlier in the U.S. the testimony of American officials involved in the Afghan campaign was declassified. Officials admitted that the failed military strategies were “based on erroneous assumptions about a country they did not understand. Thus, Washington’s fatal mistakes caused the war to drag on for two decades, becoming a conflict “that cannot be won.
