Canada told the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump that the proposal to deploy troops at the border of the two countries in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is completely unnecessary and will damage the relationship between the two long-standing allies, reports Associated Press.
“Canada and the United States have the longest non-militarized border in the world, and it is in our interest that it remain so,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
For her part, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Christia Freeland said during a press conference that they had told the Trump administration that there was no justification for placing troops on the border.
In her opinion, this is “an absolutely unnecessary step,” which Canada will consider as “detrimental to relations.
“The public health situation does not require such action (…) and Canada strongly opposes this U.S. proposal”, – she added.
