The U.S. administration runs the risk of exerting too much pressure on Iran.
This was told by Masa Rukhi, a researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
She recalled that Donald Trump’s attempts to put pressure on Tehran had already jeopardized the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan on Iran’s nuclear programme. If the situation worsens, the world will get another Kim Jong-un in the person of the Iranian leader.
According to her, Washington’s idea was clear – the United States was trying to make Iran make concessions. However, from the point of view of the Islamic Republic, the path of North Korea, which withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003 and soon conducted its first nuclear tests, seemed increasingly logical.
Only recently, Tehran had feared this scenario, as it could only lead to increased sanctions. The paradox, however, is that Iran is still under serious external pressure. Against this background, the idea that previously existed only in the circles of radical Iranian politicians now resonates with the majority of Iranians. Moreover, the expert continues, in a year’s time presidential elections will be held in the country, and the head of state is likely to be a follower of a tough political line.
“Given how doubtful the future of the nuclear deal has become, Europe, Russia and China need to take decisive measures to reduce sanctions and reintegrate Iran into the political and economic spheres. This will reduce tensions and reduce the chance of armed conflict”, – said Massa Rukhi.
