As a result of the Republican primaries, U.S. President Donald Trump has secured a formal opportunity to be re-elected for a second term. What does it mean for the incumbent president.
This is told by an expert Vladimir Vasilyev on the air of radio Sputnik.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday formally secured himself the opportunity to be re-elected for a second term, according to Associated Press.
The agency came to this conclusion after the results of the primary elections of the Republican Party in Florida and Illinois, which Trump confidently won.
The nomination procedure for the general election implies that Trump was voted for by the majority of delegates to the party congress in July. This year he was expected to win 1,276 delegates, whose votes he had already secured in the Florida and Illinois primaries.
The Republican primaries, when the president representing their party is re-elected for a second term, are largely a formality. Trump, however, travels around the country and holds campaign rallies for the general election.
Vladimir Vasilyev, Doctor of Economics and Chief Scientist at the U.S. and Canadian Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, assessed the position of the current U.S. president in the election race.
“Trump did not have any real competitors. The question for Trump was different: how many Republicans would come and say their “approval”. And Trump managed to collect 11 million votes – during the whole period of this campaign, which started at the beginning of February, the Republicans supported Trump in a friendly way. Maybe it was because of the impeachment process or because America and its administration are now experiencing a coronavirus of strength. In any case, ordinary Republicans supported Trump, and this is very important for him”, – said Vladimir Vasilyev.
The two main candidates for the Democratic Party primaries are former Vice President Joseph Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders.
The US presidential election will take place November 3.
