The Russian embassy in the United States called on a number of American politicians to stop fomenting Russophobia and to tackle the common problem – the coronavirus pandemic.
Five influential Democratic senators, including their leader, Chuck Schumer, issued a statement appealing to EU authorities to consider strengthening anti-Russian sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Lawmakers motivated their call by allegedly ongoing attempts by Russian citizens to interfere in the elections.
“We urge American politicians to exercise common sense and join forces in the fight against a common misfortune – the coronavirus pandemic”, – the embassy said on a Facebook page.
“A number of Washington politicians do not stop at anything to aggravate Russian-American interstate relations. With their attacks on Russia and our people, they pursue only their narrow selfish interests in the context of the next election campaign. We consider their attempts to involve in the next scam of the EU state unacceptable”, – at the Embassy.
Earlier, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the reports about Russia’s intervention in the primaries in the US “paranoid”, noting that the Kremlin expects the growth of such “news” as the election approaches. Thus, he reacted to the publication of The New York Times, which, citing the US intelligence, said that Russia would try to help the US President Donald Trump be re-elected in the 2020 elections and, inter alia, would interfere in the primaries of the Democrats.
