UN Security Council “Five” confirms commitment to NPT

Five countries, permanent members of the UN Security Council – Russia, China, the United States, France and the United Kingdom – reaffirm their commitment to the provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and negotiations in the field of nuclear disarmament, said a joint statement by the five foreign ministers on the website Russian diplomatic service in connection with the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty.

“The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) entered into force on March 5, 1970. Today, 50 years later, we note the invaluable contribution of this historic treaty to the security and prosperity of all countries and peoples of the world. We reaffirm our commitment to all the provisions of the NPT” , – is reported in the document.

As noted in the text of the document, the NPT laid the necessary foundation for international efforts to prevent the threat of global proliferation of nuclear weapons, which appeared in those years and is still in force.

Ministers also reaffirmed strong support for expanding access to the benefits of atomic energy and its peaceful uses.

The IAEA plays a particularly important role in the implementation of the NPT, the statement emphasizes, and countries commit to continue to provide full support to the organization and encourage other states to follow this example.

“In accordance with the NPT, we remain committed to conducting goodwill negotiations on effective measures in the field of nuclear disarmament, as well as on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control. We support the ultimate goal of creating a world without nuclear weapons with equal security By helping to reduce tensions in international relations and creating conditions for stability, security and mutual trust between countries, the NPT makes an important contribution to nuclear disarmament. .
