US President Donald Trump can not escape from the longest war for the United States – the Afghan. During this time, the Americans lost 2,351 soldiers and 3,814 contractors from private military companies, spent about a trillion dollars. And the end-edge of this is not visible.
The ink had not yet dried out under the Doha peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) when terrorist attacks again shook Afghanistan. An attack on a funeral ceremony was committed in Kabul. At least 27 people were killed, including women and children, another 55 were injured.
The Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) said that they have nothing to do with this attack. Responsibility for the incident took on the Islamic Jihad group (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation). And immediately the question arose: who rules the ball in the country? Earlier, US military aircraft attacked the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, which on March 3 conducted 43 attacks on Afghan checkpoints in Helmand and against a military base in the city of Kunduz. Hence another question: with which Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) did the Americans sign an agreement and do they control the situation to be responsible for the actions taken?
When the representative of the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) Sabiullah Mujahid said that the attacks would continue until the conclusion of the intra-Afghan agreement, he became keenly interested in the meaning of the peace agreement signed in Doha. The fourth paragraph of the agreement states that “the United States and the Government of Afghanistan will release five thousand prisoners, the Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) will release up to a thousand prisoners by March 10.” However, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani states that this condition is not binding. The Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) in response say that there will be no political negotiations without exchange. In a word, the peace process in Afghanistan has only been launched on paper, and the negotiations on the country’s political future are still very far away.
The reasons are obvious. The Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) fundamentally refuse to negotiate with Kabul. In turn, Kabul refuses to recognize the Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) as a political movement. At the same time, there are forces in Afghanistan, in particular, the “political bureau of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,” who believe that the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), firstly, are fragmented, and secondly, they do not reflect the position of the entire resistance movement American military presence in the country. The logic of the process, of course, provides the United States with the opportunity to oppose one group to another in order to weaken the strength of the resistance movement, but Washington does not succeed.
The Doha agreement provides for a reduction in the number of US troops in Afghanistan from 12 thousand to 8.6 thousand people in 135 days, and after that the United States should continue the withdrawal of all American and NATO forces within 14 months. But they are not allowed to leave Afghanistan “worthily”, they are tied into various political combinations, initiating terrorist attacks and offensive operations. What’s next? Iran, whose influence in Afghanistan is quite noticeable, believes that the United States does not have the right to sign peace agreements regarding Afghanistan with the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), and “peace in this country can only be achieved through inter-Afghan negotiations involving all political groups, including the Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation), as well as neighboring states with Afghanistan. “
But this is only a beautiful diplomatic formula, which can be implemented only in cooperation with the UN Security Council. And on this way there are a lot of obstacles, including inside Afghanistan. Like it or not, the fact that the Taliban (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), which is considered to be a terrorist structure around the world, has raised its international status in the advocacy space, which contributes to the involvement of other similar Afghan actors in the process politicians. The flip side of the moment: the political fate of the current pro-American Afghan government, with which representatives of the resistance movement do not intend to engage in dialogue. That is the curse of Afghanistan.
How much is needed for the Afghan elites, numerous warlords, extremist groups operating there, and which of them expects to dress up as a “winner”? Unclear. But ending the war is absolutely necessary for US President Donald Trump. But he can not escape from the longest-lasting Afghan war for the United States.
