Greek police and military personnel have prevented almost 7,000 attempts to illegally cross the land Greek-Turkish border in the Evros area over the past 24 hours, according to news.in.gr, citing government sources.
“Between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning, 24 people were arrested in the Evros area, most of them from Afghanistan and Pakistan. 6,955 attempts at illegal passage to Greece have been stopped”, – the newspaper reported.
From 6 a.m. Saturday, February 29, to 6 a.m. on March 5, 34,788 thousand attempts to cross the border were stopped and 244 people were arrested.
After the situation in Idlib in Syria escalated, Turkey said it would no longer be able to contain the flow of migrants and refugees, and opened its borders with the EU, after which thousands of migrants rushed to Greece. Hundreds of police officers are on the border and Greek army units have been tightened.
