UNICEF has observed complete disregard for children’s rights in Libya even after the Berlin conference, UNICEF Representative for the Middle East and North Africa Juliet Tuma stated.
“There seems to be total disregard for children and their rights”, – Tuma told Riyadh on the sidelines of the 2nd International Humanitarian Forum.
UNICEF expected the situation in Libya to improve, she said, but unfortunately they have seen an escalation of violence.
“This is unacceptable, and this is something that the parties to the conflict, whoever they are, wherever they are in the region, must take into account, because children must always be protected, including during the conflict”, – Tuma added.
An international conference on Libya was held in Berlin on January 19 with the participation of Russia, the U.S., Turkey, Egypt and several other countries, as well as the EU and the UN. The main outcome of the conference was the call for a ceasefire in Libya and the commitment to refrain from interfering in the conflict, observing the arms embargo on the parties. In addition, the meeting proposed the establishment of a committee to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
